Tromsø runs on its light: aurora nights in winter, a sun that doesn't set in summer. Plan days loosely and let the sky decide the evenings.
🛬 Landed mid-afternoon?
Stroll Storgata end to end to get the town's measure, then walk the bridge to the Arctic Cathedral around dusk. In winter, check the aurora forecast before you commit the evening — a clear first night is not to be wasted on dinner alone.
The classic winter day
Polar history in the morning, then across the bridge in the twilight window: cathedral first, cable car after. Stay up top into the evening — if the sky clears, you're already standing in the best aurora seat in town.

The classic summer day
Save the mountain for late evening: walk up the Sherpa steps in the endless light and ride the cable car down. Telegrafbukta afterwards is where the town will be.

Arctic weather is part of the experience; these absorb the worst of it. The university museum's northern-lights exhibit is best seen before an aurora night, not after.

🕐 How long to stay
In winter, give the aurora at least two or three nights — one night is a coin flip you might lose to clouds. In summer two days covers the town well. Book winter activities days ahead; this is not a turn-up-and-see town in high season.
