The university museum at the island's southern end is Tromsø's serious one. The Sámi collection is the strongest you'll see outside a dedicated museum, the Arctic natural history is thorough, and there's a northern-lights exhibit that explains what you're hoping to see at night. See it before an aurora trip and the sky makes more sense afterwards. It's a bus ride or a long walk from the centre, which keeps the crowds thin. Telegrafbukta beach is close by if you want to finish at the island's southern tip.
