The cable car climbs from Tromsdalen to the Storsteinen ledge in about four minutes. The view from the top is the definitive image of Tromsø: the island city in the sound, the bridge, the cathedral, mountains all the way round. What makes it special is the light. Under the midnight sun the view carries on all night. On clear winter evenings this is one of the easiest places anywhere to watch the northern lights over a city, and the car runs late for exactly that reason. Queues build when the sky performs, so go up before the evening rush if you can.

- Great in both seasons: midnight-sun nights in summer, aurora in winter. Wind stops the car, so check before you cross the bridge.
