The museum sits on top of the archaeological dig at the north end of the wharf. Inside are the foundations of medieval Bergen exactly where they were found, rune sticks carrying 800-year-old shopping lists and love notes, and the story of the fires that explain why the wharf looks the way it does. Go here first. The walk through Bryggen's alleys makes twice as much sense afterwards.
