Sentrum & Karl Johans gate
The main street, the old quarter, and the landmarks you'll pass anyway
Neighbourhood to wander
About
Karl Johans gate is the spine of the city: it runs from the station past the cathedral, the parliament and the National Theatre straight up to the Royal Palace. Walk it once for the landmarks and the people-watching, but be honest with yourself about the street itself: mostly chain shops and crowds. The better half of the centre is Kvadraturen, the original grid of streets from the 1600s between Karl Johan and the fortress. Quieter, handsomer, and full of galleries and courtyards most visitors miss.

A walk that works
From the station end, walk up Karl Johan with a detour into the cathedral, past the parliament, up to the palace. Then come back through Kvadraturen's grid (any street south of Karl Johan works) and finish at Akershus fortress and the harbour, which is where the old city actually began.
