Tromsdalen — cathedral & cable car
Over the bridge: Ishavskatedralen, Fjellheisen and the mountain
Neighbourhood to wander
About
The mainland side of the bridge has Tromsø's two headline sights within a short walk of each other: the Arctic Cathedral just past the bridgehead, and the Fjellheisen cable car up the mountain behind it. Tromsdalen itself is an ordinary residential valley. You come for the pairing. Walk the bridge, see the cathedral, then go up the mountain for the view in whatever light the time of year gives you.
- 🕒 How long
- Half a day with the mountain; 1–2 hours without
- 👤 Suits
- The two big Tromsø sights in one trip; the classic half-day
This is personal opinion, not a sponsored listing.
A walk that works
Cross the bridge on the southern pavement, which has the view. Take in the cathedral, then follow the signed local roads under the bridgehead to the Fjellheisen base station, ten-odd minutes on foot. Ride up. In summer the fit can take the Sherpa steps instead and let the cable car carry them down.
Practical
