About
Tromsø's centre is a compact grid of wooden houses that survived the war largely intact. The town likes to note it has one of the biggest collections of old wooden houses north of Trondheim. Storgata, the long main street, carries most of the life. The cafés take coffee seriously, this being a university town. The pubs have history. There are enough small shops to fill the hour before a northern-lights pickup. The polar museums cluster near the old harbour at the north end.

A walk that works
Start at Stortorget by the harbour and walk Storgata north through the wooden quarter. Cut down to the water at Skansen and the Polar Museum, where the old town meets the quay, then come back along the harbour front for the mountain-and-bridge view. The whole loop is short and flat, and it works in any weather. That matters here.
