Bergen's old shipping quarter. Wooden sea-warehouses (sjøboder) line the water and workers' houses climb the hillside behind them. The wooden-city character that made Bryggen famous is all here, without the souvenir shops. This is where the postcard views with nobody in them come from. It's also where Stoltzekleiven starts, the stone stairway locals run up for sport.

A walk that works
Follow Sjøgaten north past the warehouses, cut up into the lanes around Sandvikstorget, and zig-zag uphill on whichever street looks promising. They get better the higher you climb. If your legs are up to it, finish with Stoltzekleiven and walk back south along Fjellveien, the level path that runs across the hillside above the city.
