Stoltzekleiven
Bergen's stone-step fitness pilgrimage
Recommended
About
A stone stairway going straight up the side of Sandviksfjellen. Several hundred relentless steps, and Bergen treats them as a public fitness institution: locals run the whole thing against the clock. Visitors are allowed to stop and gasp. The view improves with every landing, and the one from the top is among the best in the city. Go in dry weather and real shoes. The steps are steep and uneven, bad when wet, dangerous when icy.
