The peninsula sticking out west of the harbour is the Bergen most visitors never see. White wooden houses, crooked lanes, washing on lines, and hardly a tour group anywhere. There's no ticketed sight until the aquarium and the park at the tip; the district is what you came for. In season there's an outdoor sea-water pool by the park, which locals treat as a badge of honour.

A walk that works
From the fish market head out along Strandgaten, then drift up into the back lanes on the ridge. Any of them will do, and you can't get seriously lost on a peninsula. Carry on to Nordnesparken at the tip, loop past the aquarium, and come back along the north shore next to the water.
