St Jørgen's Hospital housed people with leprosy for centuries. Its preserved wooden wards now hold one of Europe's most affecting small museums. Bergen is where Armauer Hansen identified the leprosy bacillus in 1873, and the museum tells that story with unusual dignity: plain patient rooms, names recorded, lives taken seriously. It will stay with you longer than most of the big sights. Opening is seasonal, so don't count on walking in during the off-season.
