Tøyen & Grønland

Bazaars, the city's best-value food, and the Botanical Garden

Neighbourhood to wander

About

The most international part of inner Oslo: greengrocers and bazaars, halal butchers, and shelves from half the world's kitchens. This is where locals go when they want to eat well cheaply, and the contrast with the polished harbour front ten minutes away is half the experience. It's an unpolished, lived-in neighbourhood, and that's exactly why we rate it. Nobody dressed it up for visitors, which makes it one of the most interesting food areas in the city.

A walk that works

Start at Grønlands torg and drift along the main street with its shops and eateries. Pick somewhere for lunch by instinct; it's hard to spend too much here. Then head up through Tøyen's streets to Tøyen torg for a coffee among the locals, and finish green: the Botanical Garden's gates are just beyond, and it's free.
