Grünerløkka

Cafés, vintage shops, bars — Oslo's wander-around district

Neighbourhood to wander

About

The neighbourhood people mean when they say Oslo has become cool: a former working-class district along the Akerselva river that's now the city's densest stretch of cafés, vintage shops, bars and small restaurants. There's no single sight here. The district is the sight, which makes it the best area in Oslo for a plan-free afternoon. It's at its liveliest late afternoon into evening.

🕒 How long
2–4 hours at strolling pace; easy to combine with dinner
👤 Suits
Aimless wandering, coffee stops, second-hand browsing, a relaxed evening

This is personal opinion, not a sponsored listing.

A walk that works

Start at Mathallen by the river and follow the Akerselva path upstream past the old factory buildings, then cut up into the grid of streets around Olaf Ryes plass. The square is the natural centre, and the streets north of it toward Birkelunden park have most of the shops. Loop back down whichever street looks most interesting. Getting mildly lost is part of it.

Practical

📍
Start around Olaf Ryes plass
🚶
A 20–25 minute walk north-east of the central station. Route it via the Akerselva river and the walk is a pleasure in itself. Trams and buses also run there; check the Ruter app for the current best line.
