A former shipyard turned into Oslo's glossiest waterfront: a long boardwalk of restaurants and bars facing the harbour, ending in Tjuvholmen, a small modern-architecture peninsula with a sculpture area and the Astrup Fearnley contemporary art museum. Honest version: the restaurants are among the priciest in the city and mostly not where we'd eat. Come for the walk, the harbour view and an ice cream or a sunny-day beer. Skip the dinner.

A walk that works
Walk the boardwalk from the city hall end all the way out; keep the water on your left and you can't go wrong. Cross the small bridges into Tjuvholmen at the end for the sculpture area and the viewpoint at the tip. On warm days locals swim from the little beach and bathing steps out there. Ferries to the Bygdøy museums leave from the city hall piers nearby in season, so check they're running before you plan around one.
