Ålesund Airport Vigra sits on an island north of town, connected by undersea tunnels. An airport bus meets flights and takes roughly half an hour into the centre; check the current timetable rather than trusting this. The town is also a regular Hurtigruten stop, and arriving by coastal ship drops you right in the middle of everything.

The centre is small enough that legs cover it. Brosundet, the museums and the foot of the Aksla stairs are all within ten minutes of each other. You'll only want a bus for the aquarium at the western tip and the Sunnmøre Museum east of town; local tickets live in the Fram app for this county. Confirm the route in the app before relying on it.

This is the west coast: weather arrives sideways off the sea and changes by the hour. The good news is that the town is built for it. Keep the Jugendstilsenteret and the aquarium for the wet spells, and go up Aksla the moment the sky clears rather than at a planned time. A windproof layer earns its place in the bag even in July.

Cashless everywhere, tipping not expected, eating out expensive. Beer in supermarkets only until the evening cut-off and never on Sundays; wine and spirits only from Vinmonopolet. Tap water is excellent, so skip the bottled stuff.

Ålesund is a busy cruise port, and on multi-ship days the centre and the Aksla stairs fill up from mid-morning to mid-afternoon. The town publishes ship schedules; if you're staying overnight, do Aksla early or in the evening and you'll have the view mostly to yourself.

August— Jugendfest, the big pop and rock festival, takes over the stadium and the town's beds with it. The Norwegian Food Festival (Den Norske Matfestivalen) usually lands in late summer too. Dates move around — check each festival's own site before booking.
